Analysis of intelligence in "Operation Overlord" in Normandy

The Normandy invasion, known as Operation Overlord was a landing operation on 6 June 1944, carried out by the allies during World War II. The goal was to capture the Allied armies of France occupied by the army of Nazi Germany. The invasion of Normandy was recorded as the largest sea invasion in history.

The Allied forces consisted of the United States, Britain, Canada, France and Poland's independence Forces. The Allies also were reinforced by troops from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, the Netherlands and Norwegian. The Allied forces left United Kingdom United Kingdom Strait crossing to France. The end of August 1944 Paris was liberated, and this became the successful end of Normandy.

Operation Overlord on the Normandy coast of France is considered to be a military operation that is most influential in Germany dropped and ended World War II.

Referring to the on reading materials The Misinterpreters d-day, 1944, then Allied invasion of Normandy known indirectly by Germany. At that time Colonel Alexis Baron von Roenne, Commander FHW (Germany Army Division in Western Europe) to receive information from the dealer Tate (double agent for MI5) that General Eisenhower would come to the United Kingdom.

On the other hand, the Allied forces had been planning the liberation of Western Europe from the hands of Germany in 1944 known as the year of the Second Front. This operation later known as the Overlord Operationdengan form of attack is the first landfall in Normandy or d-day.

Germany has actually kissed the danger of Allied invasion of Western Europe. The leadership of the Wehrmacht (Germany army) of General Gerd vond Rundstedt and Erwin Rommel's generals exert Germany's intelligence to seek information about the Allied invasion plans.

The Role Of Intelligence

The Allied plan already wafted by Germany to make Germany's intelligence organization deployed to make sure information about the invasion plan. But the allies are already preparing the anticipation of Germany intelligence movement by forming a group or team of Allied Deception Staffs with the pseudonym of The London Controlling Section (LCS) led by Colonel John Bevan. The main task of LCS are:

1. Deceiving and confusing Germany, with Adolf Hitler's main goals, by providing data or information that is actually a trick to mislead. The Allies gave the name of LCS operation through phishing and password Bodyguard. The phishing among other aims in order to:
a. Germany's troops spread/strength throughout Europe from Norway to the Balkans.
b. Delaying reaction against Allied invasion of Germany by providing information of heresy that the landings in Normandy is the movement of a hoax.
2. Support the movement of allied forces leading up to d-day.

Intelligence activities in the d-day is not only done by the allies but also by Germany. The difference in context is using intelligence to the Allied invasion, while Germany uses intelligence to prevent and anticipate the invasion of an ally.

Intelligence Methods

LCS in the Allied invasion of Normandy has the role to search for information related to the power of Germany, and provide information (misguided) follows Germany party running mates. Methods undertaken LCS for running this task is:

* HUMINT (human intelligence), the main strategy in humint is utilizing a double agent of MI5 and the Generals from Germany to supply the information required (false) by Germany. Such information is also given to, among others, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, the Abwehr, Germany's Military Intelligence Bureau.

* Sigint (signal intelligence), Germany has a system of secret code with the name of Enigma. LCS uses a system called Ultra to capture and convert the Enigma so that information related to d-day could be misled before getting into the hands of Germany. In addition to that LCS also make false signals about the existence of the British 4th Army in Scotland. These false signals are intentionally made to be caught Y Service, signal intelligence service Abwehr. This deception is aimed so that Germany divert the concentration of troops to Scandinavia because of indications the attack allied forces from Scotland.

* Imint (imagery intelligence), LCS supplying information in the form of a photo (fake) oil depot in Dover, Southeast region United Kingdom as if there are activities of the movement of allied forces in the region.
The result of the intelligence operations conducted by the allies in support of the Normandy invasion preparations was successfully convince Germany about the existence of General George Patton, who led an army of First United States Army Group (FUSAG) which seems to be moving from the United Kingdom towards the southeast of the Pas de Calais. This scenario success turned his force of army tank Canon Germany towards the Pas de Calais.

The impact of the Allied intelligence operations against Germany is quite fatal. The information supplied by the allies to Germany to make Colonel Alexis Baron von Roenne issued an analysis and assessment of intelligence regarding plans for the invasion of allied forces. This information is received by Adolf German generals then sent to all headquarters of the Wehrmacht in Western Europe, including military operational rekomendai, which is actually not uncommon in an intelligence assessment.

Allied intelligence operations in the Normandy landing is a great success for Colonel John Bevan and LSC, but be disastrous for Germany. Adolf Hitler eventually sentenced Admiral Wilhelm Franz Canariz and Colonel Alexis Baron von Roenne. The Germany intelligence officials considered traitorous and wrong in providing intelligence information.
